These programs are brought to Hillside by the PTO Cultural Arts Committee volunteers with funds raised during the year by the PTO. Interested parents and caregivers are always welcome to attend.

3rd and 4th grade, each will have (2) 1 hr. sessions
This year we are looking forward to hosting our bi-annual Writer’s Workshop. Nine local writers will come to Hillside for a morning of writing workshops with the 3rd and 4th graders. Two writers will visit each classroom during the morning to teach the “how-to’s” of writing.
The Incredible Chinese Paper Cutting of Hou-Tien Cheng

Each 2nd grade class will have a 1/2 hour session
To conclude the 2nd grade’s unit of study of China and in anticipation of Chinese New Year, Master Cheng demonstrates the amazing and ancient art of Chinese Paper Cutting. Master Cheng is one of the most renowned Chinese paper-cutters in the world, and “will create any subject you can think of in paper cuts … quicker than two bites of a cookie.” He will create a work for each 2nd grader to take home. Parents are welcome to visit their child’s classroom during their paper-cutting session to see the demonstration and purchase additional paper-cuttings if they choose.

4th Grade Classes
Fourth-graders will enjoy a visit with Betsy Ross as she tells The Story of Our Flag. See how the flag evolved and learn about its symbols. The audience participates in George Washington’s visit, and Betsy displays and discusses twelve different colonial flags and shares her secret for making a 5-pointed star. A question and answer session follows.
